Al Ain has now established itself as a major hub for world chess championships. The fourth edition of the FIDE World Junior Rapid & Blitz Championships opened this week at the Danat Al Ain Resort, drawing 150 young competitors representing 40 countries. The tournament runs through November 7 and marks the third World Championship milestone for the Emirati city.
Continental chess leaders gathered for the opening ceremony, underscoring the event's global significance. Presidents from the Asian, African, and American chess confederations attended the inaugural proceedings, joining FIDE officials and national federation representatives. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Sultan bin Shakhbout Al Nahyan, who leads the Asian Chess Federation and the Al Ain Chess & Mind Games Club, welcomed the participants and emphasized how the championships unite young talent through shared values of concentration, discipline, and sound decision-making.
The opening day delivered exciting racing in both sections. Five players claimed the top spot in the Open bracket after sweeping their first three rapid games: Artem Uskov, Pranav V and Praneeth Vuppala from India, Kazakhstan's Satbek Akhmedinov, and Artiom Stribuk. In the Girls' competition, Zarina Nurgaliyeva of Kazakhstan, Valeria Kleymenova, and Umida Omonova of Uzbekistan each recorded perfect scores.
The Girls' leaderboard shows close competition behind the leaders. Eline Roebers, Aliaksandra Tarasenka, Marina Kuznetsova, and Margarita Bendik sit half a point back, setting up tight battles as the event progresses. Local players also made their mark, with Hamad Essa Al-Blooshi and Husain Ali Alhammadi collecting two points each in the Open section.
The championship schedule spans multiple formats over the coming days. Nine rapid rounds will conclude on November 4, with the blitz portion scheduled for November 5 and 6. The timing coincides with Al Ain's recognition as the Arab Capital of Tourism for 2026, providing an opportunity for international delegations to experience the region's heritage and culture.
