Jeroen van den Berg has announced he will resign from his role directing the Tata Steel Chess tournament after nearly three decades in the position. Van den Berg became director in 1999 and will continue until the 2027 edition before passing leadership to Dutch Grandmaster Erwin l'Ami starting with the 2028 event. The transition reflects a major change in the stewardship of one of chess's most storied competitions.
Van den Berg expressed deep attachment to his long tenure with the tournament, calling the 2027 edition a special farewell after years of contributing to the event's development. He voiced confidence in l'Ami's ability to guide the tournament forward, citing the grandmaster's extensive knowledge and understanding of the chess world. The two will work together over the coming year to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.
Van den Berg will not disappear from the organization entirely following his departure as director. He will serve as an adviser to the tournament for three additional years following the 2027 event, with his full departure coming in January 2030. The Tata Steel Chess tournament, held annually since 1938, is among the oldest elite competitions still active and features traditional Classical time controls.
