Gawain Jones won the English Championship for the fourth time, maintaining an unbeaten record across nine rounds in Peterborough. The 38-year-old grandmaster scored 7.5 out of 9 points with six wins and three draws. Michael Adams, the second seed, also went unbeaten but finished one point behind on 6.5, alongside Brandon Clarke and Daniel Gormally.
Jones and Adams have traded the English title back and forth since 2023, with their rivalry showing no signs of cooling. The two competitors met in the fifth round and drew. Adams has accumulated seven English titles since 2007, though Jones's victory this year marks his fourth championship.
In the women's section, Elmira Mirzoeva, a woman grandmaster, matched Jones's score of 7.5/9 to win her second English title. She finished one point clear of Anusha Subramanian, who earned 44 rating points during the event. Susan Lalic, the top seed, finished third on 5.5.
Both champions added blitz titles to their accomplishments on the final day. Jones won the men's blitz championship with 12/15, while Mirzoeva took the women's blitz with 12.5 points. The rapid events, held over the first two days, saw Marcus Harvey capture the open rapid title and Sheila Jackson win the women's rapid.
Beyond the main competitions, several players made notable impressions. Owen Crawford, a national master, scored 6 points and gained more than 41 rating points. In the senior sections, Philip Crocker won the over-50 title with 6/7, and Ian Snape claimed the over-65 title with a perfect 7/7 score.
The results underscore a challenging period for English chess at the highest levels. Jones, ranked 92nd in the world, stands as England's only active player in the top 100, highlighting the country's limited representation among elite competitors.
