FIDE President Timur Turlov has introduced a comprehensive organizational restructuring aimed at modernizing the federation's governance framework. The new structure clarifies responsibilities across FIDE's governing bodies and administrative units while establishing mechanisms for transparent decision-making. The changes reflect Turlov's vision of building a stronger international institution capable of pursuing long-term strategic goals for chess development.
The General Assembly retains its position as FIDE's supreme governing body under the revised structure. The FIDE Council gains enhanced authority to shape strategic priorities and oversee their execution. A new Governance Secretariat will provide dedicated support to the council and FIDE commissions, streamlining the federation's governance operations.
Three significant leadership appointments accompany the structural changes. Adil Kozhikhov, who has advised Turlov for many years, becomes Head of the President's Office, which will concentrate on strategic initiatives and major international projects. The newly created role of Secretary General goes to Alina Dvoretskaya, formerly Director General of the International School Chess Federation, who will oversee day-to-day operations and departmental efficiency.
An Advisory Board represents another innovation in FIDE's governance approach. Composed of professionals with international experience across diverse fields, the board will operate in a consultative capacity to help develop long-term strategy and evaluate new initiatives. Darmen Sadvakasov, a respected grandmaster from Kazakhstan, chairs the Advisory Board.
The restructuring emphasizes expanded support for national federations, increased chess education initiatives, and strengthened international partnerships. Turlov characterizes the changes as reflecting a new stage in FIDE's institutional development, one that responds to rapidly evolving circumstances while maintaining stability through clearly defined roles and strategic continuity. The federation aims to create a cohesive leadership team combining experienced professionals with newcomers bringing fresh perspectives.
