The FIDE Council has prolonged its rating fee waiver for all Rapid and Blitz tournaments through 2027. The extension aims to encourage more players to participate in chess and help grow the game globally. The waived fees are normally covered by national federations as part of FIDE's rating system regulations.

This waiver program initially ran from 2021 through 2024, during which nearly 2 million euros in fees were waived. The decision to extend it recognizes the value the initiative brings to chess organizing and player development. National federations have embraced the waiver since it reduces financial strain on both tournament organizers and chess federations themselves.

The fee waiver holds particular importance for regions with fewer resources, where such support can determine whether tournaments happen at all. By removing this financial barrier for faster time controls, FIDE is making it easier to host Rapid and Blitz events that attract broader participation. The decision takes effect immediately and has been incorporated into the FIDE Handbook.
