Nihal Sarin has entered the world top 20 for the first time in his career. The Indian grandmaster climbed to world number 19 on FIDE's November list with a rating of 2720, moving up from 30th place. This achievement caps years of steady progress rather than a sudden jump in strength.

Sarin's breakthrough came at the European Club Cup in Budva, Montenegro, where he played board two for Novy Bor. He scored an unbeaten 5/6 with four wins and two draws, earning the gold medal on his board with a performance rating of 2859. His team finished just short of the title, losing on tiebreak to Bayegan Pendik of Turkey after both teams completed the seven rounds unbeaten.

The rating gain of 11 points represents a career-best ranking for Sarin. He sits level on rating with Amin Tabatabaei, who is ranked one place higher, and just ahead of Levon Aronian. The reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju ranks considerably lower at 26th place on 2710.

Sarin became the fourth Indian in the world top 100 behind Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Arjun Erigaisi, and Viswanathan Anand. His previous peak rating was 2723 in April 2026, when he held a world ranking of 22nd, so the new list marks a record-high position even though the rating itself is slightly lower.

The 22-year-old grandmaster has shown consistent progress since earning his title in 2018 at age 14. He crossed 2600 in 2019 and reached 2700 in 2023. This year brought tournament wins at the Tata Steel India Rapid and the Menorca Open, plus a top-eight finish at the Esports World Cup.

Holding the top 20 will prove challenging, as the gap between 15th and 23rd place spans only 14 rating points. Sarin's entry into this elite neighborhood reflects India's growing strength at the highest level, with the country now second in open federation averages behind only the United States.
