The FIDE World Senior Chess Championship 2026 began today in Vrnjačka Banja, drawing 385 players from 65 national federations. The field includes 44 Grandmasters and 8 Women Grandmasters competing across two age categories: 50+ and 65+. Each category features separate Open and Women's sections, with all four competitions running as 9-round Swiss tournaments using classical time controls.
The opening ceremony took place at the Zepter Hotel before the first round commenced. The event began with the anthems of Serbia and FIDE, followed by remarks from three senior officials. The President of the Chess Federation of Serbia, Andrija Jorgić, highlighted how the championship celebrates not just competitive play but also the knowledge and friendship fostered through chess across generations.
Jorgić emphasized Serbia's rich chess heritage and the nation's pride in hosting such accomplished competitors. He noted that chess uniquely welcomes older players, where experience and wisdom become advantages rather than limitations. The federation viewed this hosting opportunity as a chance to provide world-class conditions for veterans of the game.
FIDE Technical Delegate Gunnar Björnsson spoke on behalf of the World Chess Federation, describing Vrnjačka Banja as an ideal venue for senior competitors. He confirmed that four world champions will be crowned over the next 11 days and highlighted the €50,000 prize fund as evidence of FIDE's commitment to senior chess. The strong turnout from around 400 players across 65 countries demonstrated the significance of the event.
The President of the Municipality, Boban Đurović, acknowledged Vrnjačka Banja's history hosting international events but called the World Senior Chess Championship a particular source of pride. He praised the grandmasters and champions competing as sources of inspiration, noting that chess promotes values like patience, wisdom, and respect throughout society. After the ceremony concluded, officials made the ceremonial first move and Chief Arbiter Ashot Vardapetyan officially declared the tournament open.
