GM Sina Movahed captured the Freestyle Friday tournament on October 30, securing his second victory in three weeks despite beginning the event with only 1.5 points from his first three games. The turnaround proved dramatic, as Movahed reeled off eight consecutive wins to overtake the field. His final margin proved comfortable enough to hold off the competition, with GM Nodirbek Yakubboev settling for second place after losing to Movahed in the 10th round.
Yakubboev held the lead for much of the tournament's middle rounds. He climbed to a full-point advantage heading into the final stretch, only to see Movahed close the gap to a half-point before the decisive encounter. GM Faustino Oro rounded out the podium in third place, edging GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son on tiebreaks for the final step.
The tournament's early stages saw GM Zhamsaran Tsydypov and Oro posting perfect records through the first break at 4/4. Tsydypov's momentum stalled dramatically, however, as he accumulated only a half-point across his next four rounds to finish well outside the medals. Meanwhile, GM Magnus Carlsen mounted a recovery similar to Movahed's, improving from 1.5/3 to reach 5.5 points and challenge for first before eventually withdrawing after losing to GM Vladimir Fedoseev.
The final rounds shaped up as a three-player race. Movahed triumphed over Fedoseev in a rook-and-pawn endgame to secure first place, while Yakubboev won his own final-round encounter to finish on eight points. Movahed's victory positioned him, Yakubboev, and Oro to qualify for the Freestyle Friday Championship, which continues through December 4.
Beyond the main tournament, IM Polina Shuvalova earned the top women's prize by finishing 19th overall. Her performance vaulted her to sixth in the women's Freestyle Friday Championship standings.
