Fabiano Caruana assessed his performance on the first day of Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown 2026 as subpar. He found himself in difficult positions throughout the day, managing to salvage one game from a losing situation but surrendering several positions that should have resulted in draws.

Caruana suffered losses to Hikaru Nakamura and Praggnanandhaa R on the opening day. Despite the rough start, he sits in third place with 2.5 points in the competition being held at the Saint Louis Chess Club in Missouri.

The American player drew a parallel to his experience at last year's event, when he also struggled on day one before rebounding strongly on the second day. He expressed hope that this year would follow a similar trajectory as the tournament continues through the week.
