Rookie WIM Rachael Li has taken control of the 2026 U.S. Women's Chess Championship, holding a full-point lead after round nine. Li secured her advantage when IM Nazi Paikidze blundered in a knight endgame, allowing Li's pawn to advance decisively. The victory marked a significant moment for the rising player, who clinched her first IM norm with two rounds still remaining in the event.

Every game in the women's section proved decisive in round nine, creating a flurry of changes in the standings. GM Irina Krush defeated IM Alice Lee to climb to six points, tying Lee for second place behind Li's seven. WGM Jennifer Yu scored her second consecutive win against WGM Thalia Cervantes, while IM Tatev Abrahamyan, IM Carissa Yip, and FM Megan Paragua also secured victories.

In the open championship, GM Wesley So preserved his full-point lead by successfully defending against defending champion GM Fabiano Caruana. Despite playing into dangerous preparation, So found the novelty move 11...a6 over the board to escape the crisis. Caruana's chances to stay in contention required a victory, making the draw a significant moment in the tournament's trajectory.

The only decisive game among the men came when GM Grigoriy Oparin defeated GM Sam Shankland in a grinding rook and pawn endgame. Oparin's win allowed him to join Caruana in shared second place, one point behind So. Five of the six open games ended in draws, leaving the overall structure largely unchanged.

Li still has work ahead despite her commanding position. She will face IM Rose Atwell and IM Anna Zatonskih in the final two rounds, both players in the lower half of the standings. However, the margins in championship play remain thin, and a single loss could reshape the women's race as the tournament approaches its conclusion.

So must navigate two more rounds against formidable opposition, including encounters with 2700-rated grandmasters Hans Niemann and Sam Sevian. Caruana and Oparin both need to win their remaining games to maintain realistic title hopes. The penultimate round is scheduled for Tuesday, with both championships heading toward their climactic final round.
